What is The World of Warhammer: The Old World?

Warhammer: The Old World is a tabletop miniature wargame set in a richly detailed fantasy world steeped in magic, ancient rivalries, and eternal war. Set in a time of heroic deeds and dark legends, mighty armies of noble knights, relentless undead, cunning goblins, and countless other factions march to battle for power, survival, and glory.

Players take on the role of mighty generals, commanding their forces across epic battlefields in strategic clashes that test tactical skill and narrative flair. With deep lore, classic fantasy themes, and an emphasis on grand, rank-and-file warfare, The Old World offers a rewarding experience for both seasoned wargamers and newcomers alike, blending immersive storytelling with thrilling tabletop action.

The Old World is a spiritual successor to the classic Warhammer Fantasy Battles, a beloved game that defined the fantasy wargaming genre for decades. Recently revived by Games Workshop with updated rules, stunning new miniatures, and enhanced lore, this new era breathes fresh life into a legendary setting. With the next major update on the horizon, introducing the long-anticipated Grand Cathay as a playable faction, the world is expanding once more, offering new opportunities for collectors, hobbyists, and tacticians to forge their path through war and legend.

Playing The Old World at Crossfire

At Crossfire Gaming Club, we’re dedicated to making every game feel like a legendary encounter. Our Warhammer: The Old World tables are full-sized and feature custom, high-quality terrain designed to immerse you in the rich lore and tactical grandeur of the setting. From ruined strongholds to windswept battlefields, the terrain enhances narrative play and creates a cinematic experience; whether you’re fighting a quick skirmish or a drawn-out siege.

Our Old World community is both welcoming and vibrant, built around storytelling, strategy, and shared excitement for the game. In 2024, we concluded the Archipelago of Kalinago campaign, an expansive narrative adventure set in a volatile island chain off the coast of Lustria. Teeming with volcanic jungles, forgotten temples, and treacherous straits, Kalinago became the battleground where factions waged war for dominance, secrets, and survival. The campaign was a major success, showcasing the creativity and engagement of our players. Join our discord server and ask the group if you are curious to know more.

Then there are our Grand Battles! Truly colossal spectacles of strategy and storytelling. In one such event, three full-size tables were joined together, creating a sprawling battlefield where ten 1,000-point armies clashed in a single, breath-taking conflict.

The battle saw Settra the Imperishable launch a full-scale invasion of the Border Princes. As night fell and the black ships of Nehekhara unloaded waves of skeletal warriors onto the beaches of Matorea, the city’s fate hung in the balance. Sir Cecil Gastonne, the Wyrm Slayer, rallied the defenders while distant Bretonnian banners crested the hills, uncertain if they would arrive to save the day, or bear witness to Settra’s conquest.

Whether you’re interested in campaign play, epic multi-player events, or simply finding regular, welcoming opponents, Crossfire Gaming Club offers a premium Old World experience that goes far beyond the basics. Join us, raise your banner, and carve your name into the legends of the Old World.

How to get involved?

If everything above sounds like your kind of thing, Warhammer: The Old World at Crossfire is the perfect place to dive in.

Maybe you’ve never played before but want to get started. Maybe you’re a returning veteran looking to dust off an old army and jump back into the fray. Or maybe you’re just curious and not sure where to begin. Wherever you’re coming from, you’ll find a warm welcome and plenty of support here at the club.

Reach out to Chris if you want to explore the Old World. He’s been involved with organising Old World games at the club since the day it was released, and spends far too much of his time thinking about square bases and wheel arcs. Having collected High Elves, Lizardmen and Wood Elves back in ye olde days of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, since Old World released he has been invading the Border Princes with his Chaos Dwarves, and is ready to jump in with both feet to a new army once Grand Cathay drops. He loves getting new players into the club and the game, and is always up for running a friendly introduction game to the ruleset – we’ve got models you can use if your army isn’t ready yet or want to see if it’s for you first.
