The Old World – Battle of Matorea

Settra has declared war on the Old World.

Some claim it is in retaliation for Baron Carrard’s incursion into the Land of the Dead, leading the the Battle of the Salt Plain. Others suggest the High King of Nehekhara was looking for an opportunity to expand his northern borders.

Whatever the reason, the armies of the Tomb Kings sailed north, making landfall in the Border Princes.

With the darkness of night filling the skies, the black ships of Settra’s fleet began to disgorge their Undead cargo onto the beaches before the city of Matorea. As the royal host approached, Sir Cecil Gastonne, the Wyrm Slayer, who had taken charge of the defence, looked to the west. From beyond the horizon, the knights of Brionne approached, though whether they would arrive to find the defenders embattled, or that Settra’s forces had swept through Matorea and on towards distant Bretonnia, he could not say…

Crossfire’s had it’s second Grand Battle set in the Old World! Our Grand Battles are a guilty pleasure – an excuse to get a massive amount of models and a massive amount of generals together, and to reenact a key moment from the narrative of the Old World. We had 12 players in total, with 6k points on each side, and we were playing out the Battle of Matorea – when Settra began his assault on the Border Princes in retaliation for the events of our previous Grand Battle

The battle began with exiled Brettonian forces – led by special character Sir Cecil Gastonne – outnumbered, holding off against Settra’s horde against impossible numbers, while the reinforcements from Brettonia took part in a joisting tournament to see whose numbers would be graced by the presence of Lady Elisse Duchaard.

Although the defending knights and peasantry were hard pressed and fell in droves – especially on the flanks of the main battlefield, where they were defending a grail chapel and a sacred lake – the reinforcements arrived in the nick of time.

Sadly, Sir Cecil Gastonne fell in combat on the final turn, but ultimate victory was claimed by the Brettonians, much to the pleasure of the Lady of the Lake.

This Grand Battle actually took place in the middle of summer, but sadly the pesky Commissar on the committee failed to hit publish on this article until now. Don’t worry though, he has been well and truly chastised for his misstep and has promised it won’t happen again. He’s very close to sliding back in to the Old World clutches again, so we will let him off on this occasion.

Our final Grand Battle of 2025 will take place very soon, in December, so watch this space!

It’s been a special year in Old World history, the arrival of Grand Cathay heralds the first new square-based faction that GW have released in two decades! To celebrate, and to welcome players who were interested in the new model range – we kicked off a beginner’s campaign – ‘Journey to the west’ – in August. https://www.crossfiregamingclub.co.uk/blog/old-world-beginner-campaign/

If all of this sounds like your thing, come give us a poke on Discord to get involved, or even if Old World is something new to you and you want to give it a try so that you can take part in such glorious campaigns and crusades in future, reach out to us for a beginner game.
