A 12 General battle and what’s coming next for The Old World at Crossfire
Setting the Scene
In the year 2276 of the Imperial Calendar, the chivalrous Baron Carrard of Quenelles mustered a great host of bold knights to ride south and east, to crusade with him beyond the Badlands, and deep into the heart of the Land of the Dead.
The inspiration for this holy quest came by way of portents uttered by a mysterious courtier in the hall of an exiled knight, who told of the resurrection of an ancient and powerful Tomb King, Septhah the Amaranthine. The baron was unwilling to let a potential threat go unanswered and hoped to strike down the foul Tomb King before he could even leave his sarcophagus.
Alas, despite all their gallantry and heroism, the baron and his allies could not defy that what had been prophesied, and instead were welcomed to the sun-blasted desert by a silent skeletal host, commanded by the risen Septhah himself…
The Detail
On Thursday the 20th of March , the Old World gamers of Crossfire took part in our first Grand Battle – a massive, twelve-general battle fought across three tabletops, in one epic narrative conflict retelling the beginning of the current storyline for The Old World. It took months of organising. While Dan and Simon got to work on creating a new batch of club scenery themed on Nehekhara, the land of the Tomb Kings, the club’s Brettonian and Tomb Kings gamers started organising (and often printing) their models, working on forces that could be shared between six generals on each side, ending up in a massive conflict that these photos do not do justice to:

After four hours and four turns of combat, the Brettonians just about eked out a victory. Both the Baron and Septhah survived, and it appeared Baron Carrard managed to wrest some treasure from the sandy ruins and take it back north.
But Settra has heard of this affront to his kingdom. And Settra is angry…
What’s Coming Next
We’ll be following the battle up in June with the Battle of Matorea, in which Brettonian forces will have to hold off against a reprisal from the mighty leader of the Tomb Kings himself! Until then, we’ll be keeping ourselves occupied in April and May with an Old World Epochs League – an achievement points-based league system that encourages some different ways to play. If you’ve been waiting for a chance to dust off your old square bases, now’s the time to join in! Give us a poke on Discord – we’re always happy to set some beginner games up.
Well done to the dedicated The Old World Crew for putting this all together, we can’t wait to see where they take it!
