The Quest for Certus

Warhammer 40k at Crossfire Gaming Club

Crusade Progression

There have been a number of codexes launched since the release of 10th edition, each of these have their own progression systems within the codexes. You can either follow the progression system in your codex (if you have one) or you can follow our own bespoke campaign progression system, YOU CANNOT DO BOTH and you must decide at the outset.

We are not seeking to stop you using the progression systems available in the codexes, simply to provide further progression for those armies that do not have a progression system of their own yet. If you are following your codex progression system you can utilize the additional agendas from your codex (which are in the appropriate codex), if you are using the Certus progression system then you can use one or more of the Certus Agendas instead of the Core 40K Agendas. A list of ALL available agendas will be provided on our website including faction specific agendas at the time of Crusade launch. Even if you are using the Certus campaign progression system you can use the battle traits and battle scars from your codex – this is just a supplemental campaign system.

When using your own codex progression systems you are expected to roll the results online and let your opponents know what buffs your army will have access to in advance of your games. Also if you can note on your order of battle anything that is required for your crusade then it will allow everyone playing to see what your objectives are likely to be. These should be stored as a note on the dashboard of your force so that your allies and opponents can see your progress.

Relic System

As mentioned previously we are doing our own relic system – these can ONLY be collected from completing boarding actions missions within the Mausoleum. The only time you have access to other relics is if you are completing your own codex progression system and by completing certain requirements you can access specific codex relics.

The Certus Progression System

If you are using the Certus Progression system, details of which can be found further on, you will also score Certus points for taking part in and winning battles and will be rewarded with further Certus points for completing the bespoke Certus Agendas.

Certus Points:

  • Take part in a Certus Battle +1 Certus Point
  • Win a Certus Battle +2 Certus Points (this is cumulative with taking part)

Each army collects its own Certus points and they cannot be shared, pooled or gifted with any other army. You can then spend the points on a number of Certus upgrades both for your own force and for your alliance as you see fit. Each alliance upgrade can only be purchased once per alliance. Alliance upgrades should be notified to Simon and will be recorded with the campaign details on Discord.
The cost of some of the alliance upgrades may be modified so that larger alliances must pay more points for them depending on how large the alliances are.

Certus Upgrades:

UNDERESTIMATED THREAT – INDIVIDUAL UPGRADE – 3 CERTUS POINTS

There is some strategic advantage to being underestimated by your enemies, and you intend to seize it.

When playing a mission in the campaign, if you are the Underdog, you can select 1 additional Crusade Blessing for that battle.

RIGHTFUL RULERS – INDIVIDUAL UPGRADE – 3 CERTUS POINTS

Your high commander has tasked your squad with holding the line, these resources are needed by YOUR forces and you’ll be damned if you’ll let these fools take them from you.

At the start of your Command phase, select one INFANTRY unit from your Crusade army. Until the start of your next Command phase, add 1 to the Objective Control characteristic of models in that unit.

FORTUNE FAVOURED – INDIVIDUAL UPGRADE – 5 CERTUS POINTS

No matter where a commander may lead their armies, nor the perils and terrors of the foes they face, sometimes there is no substitute for simple good luck. This is just such an instance.

Once per battle round, if your Warlord is on the battlefield, you can use the Command Reroll Stratagem for 0CP.

SUPPLY SURPLUS – ALLIANCE UPGRADE – 5 CERTUS POINTS

Recognising that your alliances efforts in this region are crucial to the wider war effort, elements behind the lines have diverted more resources in your direction.

Each member of the alliance gains 3 Requisition points.

EXCELLENCE THROUGH ADVERSITY – ALLIANCE UPGRADE – 8 CERTUS POINTS

For a select few, the nightmarish conditions within the nodal matrix draw out their inner martial excellence.

Each member of the alliance can select one INFANTRY unit (excluding CHARACTERS) from their Order of Battle; that unit gains 7XP.

FORTIFIED DEFENCES – INDIVIDUAL UPGRADE – 8 CERTUS POINTS

Exploiting the rubble, wrecks and ruin of countless previous battles, your hosts are able to swiftly assemble improvised defences ready to help them weather the next enemy onslaught.

Fortified Defences: Once per battle, at the start of your Command phase, you can use this ability. If you do, until the start of your next Command phase, each time a ranged attack targets a unit from your Crusade army, if that unit is within range of an objective marker you control, models in that unit have the Benefit of Cover against that attack.

INSTALLED FORTIFICATIONS – INDIVIDUAL UPGRADE – 10 CERTUS POINTS

It is important to secure your gains through the development of a fortification and supply network. Unfortunately there isn’t space for everybody…

You can secure the benefit of your control on a single planet for the remainder of the campaign even if you later lose those benefits by losing control of the planet. This gain ONLY applies to the individual who spends the CERTUS POINTS not their whole alliance.

LINCHPIN LEADERSHIP – ALLIANCE UPGRADE – 10 CERTUS POINTS

With armies enduring the horrors of the Stilling, of unexpected civil war, and of witnessing the effects of apocalyptic nightmare weapons, firm leadership from their commanders is more important than ever.

Until the end of the battle, improve the Leadership characteristic of models from your Crusade army by 1 while they are part of an Attached unit.

TELEPORT ARRAYS ARMED – INDIVIDUAL UPGRADE – 10 CERTUS POINTS

Whether by ancient technologies, dark sorcery or powers altogether stranger, your alliance is ready to hurl their finest warriors into the very heart of battle in a sudden shock assault.

You can play 1 additional battle this month from the list of missions provided in the campaign, score points, gain XP and CERTUS POINTS accordingly.

ORBITAL BOMBARDMENT – ALLIANCE UPGRADE – 15 CERTUS POINTS

Shapes vast and dark slide into attack positions above the contested world as your warships prepare to rain death upon the armies battling far below.

Each member of the alliance can use the following ability:

Orbital Bombardment: Once per battle, at the start of your Shooting phase, place a marker anywhere on the battlefield. At the start of your next Shooting phase, place another marker anywhere on the battlefield with its centre within 9″ of the centre of the first marker, then draw a line between the centre of those two markers. For each unit that line passes over or through, roll one D6: on a 2+, that unit suffers D3 mortal wounds. Both markers are then removed.

TIMELY REINFORCEMENTS – ALLIANCE UPGRADE – 20 CERTUS POINTS

Whether they come by fortuitous warp jump, glowing dolmen gate or some other more esoteric means, you have received a sudden and substantial influx of much-needed reinforcements.

Each member of the alliance increases their Crusade force’s Supply Limit by 500 points.

REDIRECT A PASSING COMET – ALLIANCE UPGRADE – 25 CERTUS POINTS

The Bannerman Comet is passing through nearby space, it will not take much of a nudge to move it into the orbital decay of one of the planets. Though with so much warp interference in the system it may not quite go as planned.

Roll a dice to see which planet is impacted by the comet:
  1. The comet is sucked into the star’s gravity and nothing happens
  2. Certus Secoundus is hit
  3. Certus Minor is hit
  4. Certus Prime is hit
  5. Certus Moon is hit
  6. Certus Tertious is hit
If a planet or moon is hit, then roll for the damage that is inflicted:
  1. The comet splashes down in the sea, weather systems are impacted but combat is unaffected
  2. The comet crashes into one of the settlements, the alliance that initiated the comet’s decline takes 5% from one of the existing holders of the territory and claims it as its own. Randomly determine which of the existing controllers loses a share in the planet
  3. The comet crashes into an existing conflict on the planet damaging a number of combat forces. The alliance that initiated the comet’s decline takes 10% each from two of the existing holders of the territory and claims it as its own. Randomly determine which of the existing controllers loses a share in the planet
  4. The comet destroys much of the planet’s infrastructure and devastates the supply lines. The alliance that initiated the comet’s decline takes 10% each from three of the existing holders of the territory and claims it as its own. Randomly determine which of the existing controllers loses a share in the planet
  5. The comet tears a swath through much of the inhabited parts of the planet destroying vast quantities of resources that will need time and effort to rebuild. The alliance that initiated the comet’s decline takes 10% each from all of the existing holders of the territory and claims it as its own. However the benefits that this world provides are lost for the remainder of the month to ALL players regardless of how much of the planet they control.
  6. The comet smashes into the planet’s surface, igniting the core – the planet is destroyed. ALL forces deployed in the world that are not evacuated are lost. ALL the benefits from the world cease.

Next Week’s release Will Cover

  • The agendas you can select if taking part in the Quest
  • The Crusade Blessings we will be using
  • The upgrade system for monsters and walkers
